Nakuru’s best kept secret

September 25th, 2009

Known as the second largest crater in the world, Menengai crater once known to be extinct might soon put Nakuru on the world map  as not only the worlds second largest crater, but also as  one of the few craters in the world, if not the first to produce geothermal power.

The Government plans to spend about Sh5 billion to drill geothermal power wells in Menengai Crater.Currently, geothermal energy contributes about 20 per cent of energy to the national grid. The wells are projected to meet the increasing demand for electricity in Kenya by providing an indigenous, reliable, and environmentally friendly benign source of energy.

This means that the  old crater will soon start generating income for the Nakuru residence  as a tourist attraction site and as well as a  source for green electricity for Kenya .
